You have probably heard the phrase “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”? This is a legal principle saying that a person who is unaware of a law may not escape liability for violating that law merely because he was unaware of it. You also have probably heard the very similar scripture verse in Hosea 4:6 that says “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..”. The NLT says it this way “My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me.” But there is much more to this verse than simple ignorance or lack of knowledge. The verse goes on to say “Because you have rejected knowledge…because you have forgotten the law of your God”….or the NLT says “Because you refuse to know me…” It wasn’t just a lack of knowledge, they purposefully rejected it. And in the verbiage of the NLT, they rejected God. That sounds very familiar in this day. People refusing to know God, to honor Him and keep His Word. They know the Word, but refuse to do it. In Hosea’s day, the result would be that God would lift His blessing from them and their children. And He did and the Israelites were conquered by Assyria. God said if you don’t want Me, fine, I’ll go. But along with His presence goes His blessing. May we never allow this in America!
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6 (NKJV)
6 My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me. Since you priests refuse to know me, I refuse to recognize you as my priests. Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, I will forget to bless your children. Hosea 4:6 (NLT)
25 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. Proverbs 16:25 (NKJV)
