I read a sad story this week from a mother who has two sons in their mid twenties. She said she had been a member of her chosen political party all of her life and she voted for the current president. Her sons informed her that if she voted for him again they would lose all respect for her and would not speak to her anymore. 🙁 One of the great things about America, or it use to be anyway, is the freedom we have as citizens to vote. There are a wide range of candidates with varying political views to choose from at the polls. And we can, or should be able to, vote however we choose without harassment or threat from anyone. But this woman’s story, and there are many more just like it, is all too common today. This divide in our country over politics has left us in a heartbreaking position. It has divided families and friends from sea to shining sea. I’m sure many of you have experienced or know someone experiencing this very thing. Whatever happened to “let’s agree to disagree”? Now-a-days, people can’t even wear a political cap on their head without fear of assault. What used to be disagreements have become intolerances. People seeking political and religious freedom have flocked into this country from places all over the world that would throw them in prison or worse if they spoke out publicly against their government and would never give them the right to vote. Let’s pray that this sentiment is not infiltrating here in the land of the free or America will not be the land of the free much longer.
13 It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. Galatians 5:13 (MSG)
17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NLT)
16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 1 Peter 2:16 (ESV)32
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 (NLT)
