Be Equipped!

Be Equipped!

Last week’s Food was about the importance of reading and doing God’s Word.  The danger of not knowing God’s Word is that it leaves you susceptible to “every wind of doctrine” that comes along.  Or, in other words, it becomes easy to fall for every new teaching not based on scripture. If you don’t know what’s in the Bible, then when you hear a message that sounds good, makes you feel good and maybe even sounds spiritual, you get drawn away by it.  Satan is a crafty one.  He knows that most Christians have a basic knowledge of the Word.  So he takes that basic knowledge and throws in a little lie here and there to give it the appearance of truth –  much like what happened to Eve in the Garden.  The serpent (Satan) starts off by reminding Eve that they couldn’t eat from every tree in the Garden.  Basically, this is true but has a negative twist.  It puts emphasis on not being able to eat from every tree, when God said they could eat from every tree except just one. Then the serpent calls God a liar and accuses God of having ulterior motives in an attempt to cast doubt in Eve’s mind that God is not really the loving God He portrays Himself to be.  We are warned in the scripture about preachers who will be more than happy to attend to those with itching ears. Those with itching ears are those who no longer want to hear sound doctrine. It’s too hard.  It requires changes to their life and they are quite happy where they are.  So they will seek out preachers who will assure them that God is a God of love and would never bring judgment down on them.  Repentance is obsolete because of God’s mercy.  These preachers will water down the Word so much that nothing is required of the believer anymore.  It’s all about God’s love, God’s mercy and God’s willingness to overlook any sin in their life.  On the surface, this sounds wonderful but don’t fall prey to this enticement!  You must be equipped to fight the good fight of faith and you can only do this with the Word of God!

14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Ephesians 4:14 (NLT)

1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1-5 (NKJV)

3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 2 Timothy 4:3 (NLT)

11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 (NLT)
